Workshop Overview
Conceptual understanding goes beyond memorization of facts and requires students to develop a deep understanding of key concepts and how they relate to one another. This workshop will enable teachers to understand and implement concept-based learning and teaching in the classroom, using inquiry-based strategies to engage students and support them in constructing meaning. The key areas of focus will be:
- What are concepts? How do you draw upon concepts in your subject area?
- What is the relationship between concepts, facts and skills?
- What is inquiry-based learning?
- What are the different types of inquiry and how could you apply these in your subject area?
- How can you design factual, conceptual and provocative or debatable questions to support inquiry and conceptual understanding?
- How do you develop student agency through inquiry-based learning?
