AI integration in education

Workshop Overview

This workshop is designed to demystify the use of AI and its role in education. Over three days, this workshop will equip educators to develop a foundational understanding of Generative AI and build practical skills to leverage artificial intelligence effectively in the classroom.

Day 1 will begin with an exploration of why teachers should embrace AI and how AI is reshaping the global landscape. We will also focus on harnessing the power of prompts, providing insights into crafting effective prompts, and offering tangible examples applicable to educational settings.

On Day 2, we will focus on leveraging AI for learning design. Participants will learn how to utilize AI in writing syllabi, developing curriculum standards or benchmarks, creating teaching tools, assessments, and implementing personalized learning playlists tailored to individual student needs.

On the final day, we will look at cultivating healthy relationships with AI and seamlessly incorporating AI as a personalized learning assistant in our classrooms. Participants will also look at how to engage students on the ethical use of AI and establish a balanced relationships with AI. We will explore strategies to address these concerns as well as practical ideas on including students in developing an AI policy.

Heather Onderick

Heather Onderick has over 20 years experience in the classroom and as a learning leader. She has worked to design learning rooted in the American, Singaporean, Ontario standards and also with the Common Ground Collaborative framework. She has worked as an ELL teacher, an elementary classroom teacher and middle school Humanities teacher. Heather’s areas of expertise include universal design for learning, concept driven curricular design, student centered coaching, and reading and writing workshop.

Intrigued by the power of Generative AI, Heather has taken numerous workshops and courses on AI for educators. In the summer of 2023, she spent 6 weeks writing a research paper and doing a deep dive on harnessing the power of AI in the classroom. Since then, Heather has been proactive in working with her teachers to enhance their learning design with AI as an assistant.
