Informed teaching: Planning, Assessing and Documenting learning in the early years

Workshop Overview

Assessment is critical in helping early childhood educators understand and support young children’s learning. As educators we are constantly asking ourselves, “How do we assess learning in the early years and what do we do with this information?” Understanding the purposes and benefits of assessment ensures that educators have the information they need to make decisions that impact the curriculum, environment, and teaching practices. In this workshop we will explore the role of assessment in documentation, observation and teaching and learning.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify the purposes of assessment in early childhood
  • recognize the different types of assessment
  • reflect on their role as assessor and participant in the student’s learning
  • use the observation cycle effectively
  • scaffold student’s learning through informed differentiated play
  • document, monitor and interpret learning
