Literacy and numeracy in the early years

Workshop Overview

Literacy and numeracy are the key skill sets every parent and educator wants their children to embrace, develop and be confident in, as they allow us to make sense of the world, as well as proficiently participate in it.

Early years experiences, relationships and environments shape children’s perceptions and attitudes towards reading, writing and learning mathematics, and if designed with awareness can inspire children to become life-long learners, authors, storytellers and capable mathematicians. In this workshop, early childhood educators will learn strategies that create positive, engaging experiences in early literacy and numeracy.

This workshop creates an opportunity for early years and early elementary (up to Grade 2) practitioners to:

  • take a critical, research based look at their current bank of literacy and numeracy practices and teacher beliefs
  • explore the research, best practices, resources and protocols behind child-centered literacy and numeracy experiences
  • re-design their own classroom environments, planning and practices towards developing positive literacy and numeracy experiences for their learners
