Developing a culture of Growth Mindset: Edubridge International School

Date: October 15, 2020 There are many drivers for school improvement – accreditation, parent demand, teacher desire or improved learning. One of the biggest impact on improvement of any organisation is ‘collective mindset’. In order to improve we must be willing to take a risk, to try new things, learn from mistakes and set an organisational culture where marginal gains are planned for and delivered. The teachers at Edubridge International School challenged themselves to be open-minded and to consider how their school can go from ‘good to great’.

The one-day workshop looked at fixed and growth mindsets, considering the impacts of each on school culture and on student learning. We explored a model for developing curriculum and culture in 5 easy steps. While a number of teachers merged growth mindset into curriculum another team of colleagues planned for marginal gains across different school sections, and the impact that could have on learning. Throughout the day the Edubridge staff showed open-mindedness and a desire to learn. This was social learning, with a large group openly debating and generating new ideas that will benefit the students. This workshop was an excellent stimulus for the staff as they prepare for known and unknown challenges in the next year.

“ The sessions led by Malcolm and Priyamvada were highly engaging with a perfect balance of content delivery, deep thinking, and small-group discussion. Everyone was enthusiastic and fully engaged throughout the day. In the morning, teachers completed a short survey to elucidate their educational beliefs and various aspects of alignment across our school. We then took a deep dive into Growth Mindset and how it impacts high-quality learning. In the afternoon, while the teachers worked asynchronously to apply what they learned in their unit planning, the school leaders had a session on Marginal Gains that made clear the importance of striving for continual school improvement. During the final reflection session, numerous teachers shared what they learned and how they will apply their new insights when designing lessons and assessments. Overall, we were very pleased with the workshop. Malcolm and Priyamvada were knowledgeable, well-prepared, inspiring, and highly effective in supporting our school in the alignment of vision, mission, educational beliefs, and actual practice.”
