Sm@rter than Google: Enriching learning through research

Date: February 4, 2021 Students all over the world are frequently required to complete an independent project for which they will “Google” information. Some may go no further than the first Wikipedia entry in order to copy and paste what they need in order to hand in as soon as possible! This will certainly not be the case for the pupils of the teachers, librarians and educational leaders who attended the workshop “Sm@rter than Google: Enriching Learning through Research”.

This dedicated group engaged in rich conversations about the power of learning through research, building on their prior knowledge to explore the concepts presented. During the workshop, the participants discussed strategies to guide students to become confident researchers. In the final session, participants through peer feedback explored how to incorporate research skills to enrich student learning in the context of their own professional practice.

To enrich student learning through research it is important for teachers and students to value each stage of the process rather than focus solely on the final product. When guided appropriately in the research process, students gain confidence and develop a rich set of independent life-long learning skills including: critical and creative thinking, communication, organisation, perseverance and a love of learning.

Thank you Margaret for facilitating a very engaging, interactive and reflective workshop for us. Thank you to all the participants for their collaboration and commitment to engage in learning after a long day of teaching. Sharing snapshot of participants’ feedback…..

The workshop SMARTER THAN GOOGLE was very beautifully paced with an even more brilliant facilitator. The pre-reading material was really useful.

The workshop on Smarter than Google was enriching and engaging. It went beyond my expectations when Margaret brought in the Thinking Routines and Kuhlthau’s ‘Zone of intervention’ as tools to keep students engaged and self-motivated while doing research. A much recommended workshop to take your teaching to another level.
