Developing Mathematical Thinking

Date: August 25, 2025 This workshop for Grades 3–8 mathematics educators focused on transforming classrooms through inquiry-based learning that elevates student thinking and discourse. Participants engaged as learners in rich mathematical tasks—from uncovering patterns to deriving formulas—while exploring strategies to deepen reasoning, collaboration, and conceptual understanding. Drawing on NCTM’s Principles to Actions and the IB inquiry framework, the session highlighted how to design and adapt tasks for higher cognitive demand, foster productive classroom conversations, and build a culture of mathematical inquiry.

“It was great experience to attend the training and learnt a lot. Appreciated how the training emphasized shifting from procedural rote learning to encouraging deep reasoning. Prioritizing students’ thinking process over merely getting the correct answer builds stronger conceptual understanding.”

Roopa Kiran Dudhankar, The Knowledge Habitat, Pune

“The three-day sessions were truly insightful, offering fresh perspectives on approaching questions and emphasizing learners’ cognitive development.
My “aha” moment came with the fraction question, which made me shift my focus from simply representing the calculation visually to considering how a learner would think through the problem.!.”

Vaishali Bachhav, JBCN International School, Oshiwara, Mumbai

“The workshop was very enriching. Ms. Heidi is very interactive, and I admire her way of conducting the workshop with so many insights. It was a well thought, planned and systematic way of conducting the workshop.”

Surama Das, The Knowledge Habitat, Bengaluru

“I would recommend this to every educator – this adds so much value and provides practical solutions to include true inquiry and higher levels of cognitive tasks in classrooms. It was insightful, collaborative and engaging through and through and I’m sure a lot of us will implement the protocols and clear expectations that were set these three days.”

Pearl Lobo, Redbricks Education Foundation, Ahmedabad

“A wonderful 3 days of learning and discussions that has enriched me greatly! I would tell others about the way in which these workshops were conducted with innovative protocols and student discourse. .”

Greeti Chacko, Bombay Scottish School, Mumbai
